  • Always ask for final agreement in writing. Keep notes of negotiations—your own, emails, etc.
  • The goal is to negotiate the best package—you will have to give up some things to get other things. There may be places where they can move (one-time expenses) versus places they have no room (additional salary or other continuing, long-term expenses).
  • There might be things that you can’t get right now (rank, particular equipment) that you can agree to get down the line.
  • View this as a collaborative effort not an adversarial one
